Mikumi National Park lies on the mainland, so a trip from Zanzibar has more than one leg. You leave the island, reach the mainland and cover the road to the park before the first game drive. The SGR train runs between Dar es Salaam and Morogoro only, and Mikumi is reached on the road after that. There is no direct train from Zanzibar to Mikumi.

For most travellers from Zanzibar, a two-day format with one night near the park is the more relaxed choice, because the first day is largely spent on the move. A single day by air can work if the schedule fits, but it leaves little room for delays.
2 day safari from Zanzibar: how the days can run
A planning model, not a timetable.
Day 1. You cross from the island to the mainland, then continue to the park. Getting off the island is its own leg, and you can read about the Zanzibar ferry on the Stone Town site. If you arrive late, there may be little or no time for a game drive before the gates close at 6 p.m.
Day 2. An early morning drive on the Mkata floodplain, then the return leg. Keep a buffer if you have a flight home the same day.

Flight to the airstrip
The park has its own airstrip, and scheduled and charter flights are possible in principle. Do not assume a daily flight from Zanzibar. Ask which flight a package uses and check the current schedule.
Train and road
From Dar es Salaam the SGR reaches Morogoro, and the road continues to Mikumi, about 1 hour from Morogoro. Timetables and fares are on the Dar es Salaam page.
Entry insurance
Since 1 October 2026 the state entry insurance also applies to the mainland, at USD 44 per person for up to 92 days. The policies for the islands and the mainland are mutually recognized, so check before you pay twice and buy the one for your first point of entry.
